Friday Five: Holiday Cleansing

Here is the holiday cleansing Friday Five from Revgals:

Please tell us your least favorite/most annoying seasonal….

1) dessert/cookie/family food
Fruitcake has got to be the nastiest food invention ever.  Any food that is a standard holiday joke should make one wonder.

2) beverage (seasonal beer, eggnog w/ way too much egg and not enough nog, etc…)
Eggnog is disgusting. It sounds disgusting. It tastes disgusting. No matter what you put in it, it remains disgusting.

3) tradition (church, family, other)
As far as traditions go, I enjoy the few that we have as family and as a church. Obviously, as a pastor, it can be a crazy time of year but there is so much joy and expectation in the Advent season that I’m thankful for the break in routine.

4) decoration
Tinsel.  It is incredibly messy and somewhere in my past, it became synonomous with "tacky." No offense to anyone who uses tinsel. If you could see my current decorations, you would definitely not be offended.

5) gift (received or given)
I honestly can’t think of anything for this. If it was significantly traumatic, it most likely has been buried in the recesses of my mind and would only be retrieved with extensive therapy.

BONUS: SONG/CD that makes you want to tell the elves where to stick it.
Some renditions of "Little Drummer Boy".  I have to admit that it is very difficult to pull off the "Ba-rump-ba-ba-bum" with class and it is quite humorous to see someone attempt it.

Friday Five: Thanksgiving

1. Did you go elsewhere for the day, or did you have visitors at your place instead? How was it?
I traveled a good 7 minutes to my parent’s home for a Thanksgiving meal with my grandmas, my sister and brother-in-law, and my niece and nephew.  It was wonderful! We are blessed to all live right her within 10 minutes of each other.  No holiday travel required!

2. Main course: If it was the turkey, the whole turkey, and nothing but the turkey, was it prepared in an unusual way? Or did you throw tradition to the winds and do something different?
We had a very traditional Thanksgiving meal and it was delicious! Turkey and all the trimmings.

3. Other than the meal, do you have any Thanksgiving customs that you observe every year?
Our church serves an annual community meal on Thanksgiving – serving nearly 400 meals.  My holiday usually involves going there for awhile to greet helpers and guests.

4. The day after Thanksgiving is considered a major Christmas shopping day by most US retailers. Do you go out bargain hunting and shop ‘till you drop, or do you stay indoors with the blinds closed? Or something in between?
I avoid the stores at all costs!  I usually spend the day putting up Christmas decorations and catching up with friends or former youth who are home for the holiday.

5. Let the HOLIDAY SEASON commence! When will your Christmas decorations go up?
I have half already up!  I put my outside lights up the other day when it looked like the last warm day.  My tree is up as well and will be decorated tomorrow. Bring on the holiday!

7 Random Things About Me

I’ve been tagged by my friend Midwest Nest with a meme to list seven random things about myself.  I’ve thought on this all day, have started a list three times, and nothing has come to me.  Not even one.  Maybe I don’t know what classifies as random or maybe I don’t find many things in my life to be random or weird.  Perhaps it just goes with my inability to lock things down.  I have always had difficulty naming favorites.  I hate to limit myself.  Who knows my favorite today, maybe this hour even, might not be my favorite the next.

So, for those of you who are saying, "My Lord, Melissa, its simply a list of random things….", here is my attempt.

  1. I’ve lived in the same city for 34 years except for four years in college.
  2. My sister and I were baptized together by my father.
  3. I’ve played piano and violin for most of my life although not much anymore.
  4. I minored in Spanish but can hardly speak it now.
  5. I had my first kiss when I was 23.  Not necessarily by choice (the age thing, not the kiss thing). :)
  6. I owned a dog for four days. The only pet I’ve ever owned.
  7. I had major surgery when I was three-months-old which left me with stitches the width of my abdomen.

There.  I did it. Phew.

Friday Five: Birthday, Redux
Favorite way to celebrate your birthday (dinner with family? party with friends? a day in solitude?) Celebrating with family is a must at some point. One of my favorite traditions the past three years is a trip out-of-town all by my lonesome. My parents give me several days away and it is the best trip. Sleep in, read books, not speak a word . . . Heaven on earth.

1. “It’s my party and I’ll [blank] if I want to…”

2. “You say it’s your birthday… it’s my birthday too, yeah…”
Do you share your birthday with someone famous?
Larry Hagman who played JR on Dallas. When I was younger, it made me think I was bound to be cursed for life.

3. “Lordy Lordy look who’s forty…”
Milestone birthdays:
a) just like any other birthday–they’re just numbers, people.
b) a good opportunity to look back/take stock
c) enjoy the black balloons–I’ll be hiding under a pile of coats until the day is over
d) some combination of the above, or something else entirely.

4. “Happy birthday, dear… Customer…”
Have you ever been sung to in a restaurant? Fun or cringe-worthy? If I have been, I’ve blocked it out of my mind. It would be something this introvert would truly not enjoy!! (note to all my friends!)

Tell me one advantage and one disadvantage about your particular birthday (e.g. birthday in the summer–never had to go to school; birthday near Christmas–the dreaded joint presents)

Friday Five: Holiday Food

1. Favorite cookie/candy/baked good without which, it’s just not Christmas.

My mother’s Mamie Eisenhower Christmas cookies. Iced, decorated and waiting for me each year.  Can’t have Christmas without them.

2. Do you do a fancy dinner on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, both, or neither? (Optional: with whom will you gather around the table this year?)

My family gathers on Christmas Day for a nice meal – nothing fancy, smancy.  That isn’t us but definitely good eats and great company at my parent’s home.

3. Evaluate one or more of the holiday beverage trifecta: hot chocolate, wassail, egg nog.

Hot chocolate =  teenagers
Wassail = no clue
Egg nog = drinkable paint

4. Candy canes: do you like all the new-fangled flavors or are you a peppermint purist?

5. Have you ever actually had figgy pudding? And is it really so good that people will refuse to leave until they are served it?

Never had figgy pudding. And if it makes people refuse to leave, I will never serve it. :)
